Joely Bear Appeal
170 Gave Blood, NOT Excuses!

The session was the first at Yavneh College170 donors gave up their time on Sunday to give blood at Joely Bear’s blood donor session in Borehamwood. Whilst this was the 44th such session, held in conjunction with the National Blood Service, this was the first to be held at the new Yavneh College. The day was superbly catered by Josepha White who donated her time and food to support Joely Bear’s cause. As has been their custom for the last 15 years, all bread was donated by Grodzinki’s Bakery.

As usual, a bouncy castle, face painting and other games in the creche provided for all the family

A team of 30+ willing volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly and safely from the early morning setup, through the day until the end with security, refreshments, crèche and car park assistance. These events could not run without the assistance of this dedicated team, many of whom have helped consistently throughout the charity’s life.

Most pleasing was the fact that many of the 28 new donors recruited at this session had only just turned 17, the age at which you can start donating. Many of these have grown up seeing their parents donate at previous Joely Bear sessions.

Almost anyone between the ages of 17 and 65 can become a new blood donor. Those regular donors who remain healthy can continue to donate and claim their free cups of tea, sandwiches and biscuits.

Within two weeks of the session, the blood donated there will have been put to essential, life saving use. Whether this is in routine or emergency surgery, treatments for cancer and many other major illnesses and diseases. Without blood donors, these surgeries and treatments would not be possible.

Promoting the importance of giving blood is just one of the three main aims that Joely Bear has.

Joely Bear’s current major fundraising target is to contribute a total of £45,000 towards providing a non-clinical fun room in the new wing at Great Ormond Street Hospital, due to open in 2011.
