Sunday 23rd November 2008 sees 42nd Blood Donor Session to be co-hosted by the Joely Bear Appeal and The National Blood Service.
In March 2008, The Joely Bear Appeal reached some important milestones. Not only did we hold our 40th Blood Donor Session, in conjunction with The National Blood Service, but we also saw our 5000th donation and introduced our 1000th new donor. This was one of the most successful sessions in our 13 year history with more than 200 people in attendance, 60 of whom gave blood for the first time. Many of these new donors then helped us build upon this success at our 41st session in July.
Well-known children’s entertainer and TV presenter Dave Benson Phillips was on hand in March to show his support and entertain the children that had watched their parents donate and save lives. Dave also presented us with a celebratory cake, on behalf of the NBS, to mark this important session, which was later enjoyed by the children of Treasure Island Ward at Barnet General Hospital – a ward to which we have a strong affiliation.
It was particularly significant that Dave was in attendance as he had entertained the children at Joel’s 4th birthday party in February 1994 and remained close friends with The Joely Bear Appeal since its launch in 1995.
Looking to the future, our 42nd Blood Donor Session will be held on Sunday 23rd November 2008 at Fairfield Junior School in Radlett. We hope that you will be able to join us and make this session as successful as the previous one.
As with previous blood days, there will be children’s entertainment (including a bouncy castle and face painting), refreshments, and car parking provided.
While donated blood is used in hospitals for emergencies, there are also many who require transfusions over an extended period, such as cancer patients. A lot of their healthy blood cells are destroyed during chemotherapy, and blood products like platelets aid recovery by replacing these lost cells.
